Meta cognition

What is Meta cognition? Well, I was not aware of this word until very recently, and I decided I might as well add this as a post because the teachers always stress about having "Meta cognition".

According to the dictionary, Meta cognition is defined as "knowing about knowing." It can take many forms; it includes knowledge about when and how to use particular strategies for learning or for problem solving.

So, I learned meta cognition throughout my Science lessons, and I only realized it today!

For example, in order to conduct an experiment properly, I was told to follow these steps:

Ask a question

Make a hypothesis

Experiment

Draw a conclusion

Change the hypothesis if the results do not support the hypothesis

The above experimental process encourages meta cognition and trains the mind as one has to constantly re evaluate and check if what their doing is correct!

I realize meta cognition is a very important skill as it encourages a stable, self-motivated learner. Since I'm far from that, I guess I have to work on my meta-cognition!

Evolution of the Microscope

As some may know, the microscope has a long history and made numerous contributions to the many fields of science. It was a great challenge for me to make this information concise and easy for people to understand while still maintaining a sense of professionalism. I believe this powerpoint was able to carry the rich history of the microscope and the great men that made them while not "dumbing" it down.

I am very proud of this work as I put in a lot of effort to make it look appealing and at the same time educate others.

As with my other posts with powerpoints, please do wait a while as the powerpoint takes some time to load.

Thank you!

Stem Cells

This is a powerpoint I did for my ACE that I am very proud of.

I believe it was able to convey a message and educate people more on stem cells while being simple and easy to understand.

Please wait as it takes a while to load the powerpoint!

Thank you!

Reflections on Term 3 Science

Well, its almost the end of Term 3 already.

Time flies too fast.

I'm very happy with my Science results this term though.

I'm glad to say I took Science very seriously this term unlike Term 2. I took notes, did my homework conscientiously and listened to class.

However, I only got 31/40 for my test. At least my hard work payed off and I got an A1!

Still, I will strive to of course get higher marks.

Reflections on Term 2 Science

Disastrous.

I had not been following my plans or doing anything this term. I was slacking.

During Science class, I was doodling and not listening, thinking that everything was not important.I think I was too cocky and arrogant, thinking that I knew it all.

When the final test came, I was unprepared. Which explains my C6.

However, my Science teacher, Mr.Low, spoke to the class about our bad results. These were his words if I'm not wrong:"Class, I believe all of you have done badly. Many of you come and ask questions to ask for marks. Why didn't you do this during my Science class? The important thing now is that you learn from your mistakes and move on. There is still Term 3 and the End of Year exams. So , I know that everyone is sad, my the aim of school is not to just score a whole bunch of A1s, but to LEARN."

I think I learned more from his words than the whole term.

In order to succeed in Science, I realized one must have an knowledge-hungry mind, always asking questions and questioning the world around us. In order to be a good scientist, we have to accept the fact that our hypothesis may be wrong, and that there are always other alternatives to our hypothesis.

Those very inspiring words by Mr.Low changed my outlook on Science.

Learning Science would never be the same to me again.

Reflections on Term 1 Science

In Term 1, we were introduced to the Science Lab and the concept of a Science practical.

I couldn't have been more happy.

In primary school , the exploration of science had been thrust aside as we learned more on the cold hard facts, worksheet after worksheet.

Now in sec 1, I was excited that I could explore more with hands-on exercises.

I'm really grateful for this Science practical idea as I really became more "into" and immersed in Science.

I believe that Term I got my first ever "A1" for Science.
